    2024-05-24

WASHINGTON — Before lighting a campfire or setting off fireworks this Memorial Day, the Washington Department of Natural Resources is urging people to pay attention to fire restrictions and safety tips.

Here are a few ways to enjoy a campfire safely.

    • Check burn bans and fire restrictions on the DNR website .
    • When possible, check with the campground ahead of time to make sure fires are allowed
    • Keep fires small, contained and in a metal ring or rocks.
    • Never walk away from your fire.
    • Douse fire with water when extinguishing. Rake the embers out and douse the fire again.
    • A campfire may require 5-gallons of water before it's completely out.
