(PUEBLO, Colo.) — After a year-long $4.2 million renovation, the Barkman Library in Pueblo is reopening and will be hosting a week of grand opening festivities starting on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the library located at 1300 Jerry Murphy Road.

The Pueblo City-County Library District (PCCLD) said the library’s project involved major improvements including an expanded community meeting room, a bridge connecting the library to an outdoor green space, dedicated spaces for kids, teens, and adults, and an updated security system.

“We are so excited to share this beautiful, refreshed library that will serve the community well for years to come,” Sherri Baca, PCCLD executive director said.

Starting with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday at 9 a.m., PCCLD will also offer the opportunity to get photos with Bluey and Bingo from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 along with the Pueblo Police Department (PPD) giving out free drawstring bags filled with coloring books and crayons.

On Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. the Angel Vigil and Colorado Humanities will present the character of Diego Martín-el Vaquero, a Spanish colonial cowboy who was the first cowboy to ride the open ranges and sleep under the stars, according to PCCLD.

Friday, Sept. 13 starting at 6 p.m. more than 1,200 backpacks provided by Minnequa Works Credit Union will be given away along with free school supplies. The event will also offer minors a free haircut and Kids Zumba sessions will be held in Belmont Park.

PCCLD said all events will be free and open to the public.
