Burlington County awards grants to 6 food assistance programs

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Burlington County is providing grants to six organizations that help feed people who are food insecure.

The first check was delivered Thursday to Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly, which has been running a small food pantry on the first floor for a few years. Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hobson delivered the $75,000 check to help support the hospital’s cause.

On the shelves, you’ll find rice, beans, cereals and other non-perishables. Virtua Vice President Stephanie Fendrick said locally sourced fruits and vegetables are also available for free.

“A lot of people are on medications and it’s so important to have the food to help absorb those medications,” she said. “It just contributes to one’s overall health. It’s one of our basic needs as humans.

“Our goal is to touch as many people who need help, who identify themselves as struggling with being able to afford food,” Fendrick continued, “being able to come here, easily access the food, and then help get them connected to other resources in the community.”

Other grant recipients include the Food Bank of South Jersey, the Burlington Township Food Pantry, Jewish Family and Children’s Services, Oaks Integrated Care, and the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Food Pantry.

“We also want organizations to know that there’s still funds available and they should continue to apply,” Hobson said.
