Popular Orlando New York Style Eatery, New York Bagel And Deli, Shut Down After State Inspection

It's no secret that Florida is a popular destination for retiring or moving New Yorkers. In fact, data shows that 91,201 New Yorkers moved to Florida in 2022 alone.

It makes sense, then, that eateries allowing New Yorkers to enjoy a taste of home can do well in the Sunshine State. I've written about New York-themed eateries like Salvatore’s Old Fashion Pizzeria and Jeff's Bagel Run opening in Florida. Unfortunately, one eatery in this genre, New York Bagel And Deli, was recently temporarily shut down after a separation.

About New York Bagel And Deli: Although the name would imply this joint is all about the bagels, its menu is incredibly extensive. In addition to New York-style bagels in various flavors, this eatery serves pizza, heroes, wraps, deli foods, and cheesesteaks.

Orlando patrons and visitors give this eatery 4.4 out of 5 stars. Many are happy to have New York options in Florida. A reviewer named Benjamin wrote, in part:

"There are truly not enough stars to be left for this place. My wife and I come every single week. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming...There are other bagel spots in Orlando (that) people will say are “the spot to go” or “super authentic” but not a single one holds a torch to this location. These are the only bagels that truly taste authentic to New York bagels."

What Happened At Inspection?: According to data from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, an inspection occurred on July 12, 2024. At that time, 12 violations were noted.

Examples of basic violations were the observation of deceased roaches, and food and coffee lids being stored on the floor.

High-priority violations came from sanitizer not being used at proper strength for washing, the observation of live roaches, and a stop-sale order for cold foods like turkey, sausage, and cheese being held at too high temperatures.

As a result of some of the above violations, the facility on Gateway Avenue was temporarily shut down.

A follow-up inspection on July 16, 2024, still yielded some violations, but none were considered an immediate threat to the public so the restaurant was free to reopen.

Please note that an inspection is one moment in time and not necessarily how a restaurant conducts itself every day.
