Pickleball became one of the newest competitive events to join the Oregon Trail Days lineup over the weekend. Hunter Walker goes to hit the ball back during the competitive division of the OT Days Pickleball tourney. Rick Winkler and his partner Ty Frohbieter were the winners the competitive division. The tournament also included a noncompetitive division.
Auto Racing: Large crowd turns out at HiWay 92 for holiday-themed night of races
GERING — One of the largest crowds in years was in attendance at HiWay 92 Raceway on the first Saturday of July for a night of racing and the fireworks show that followed. The attendance was one of the best since the Mike Warren and Lee Schwartzkopf days roughly a decade ago and the energy level was high.

Wagons Ho! Those of us who are a certain age grew up playing the original Oregon Trail game on a computer at school. Against a black backdrop, a tiny pixelated green wagon trekked along the Oregon Trail. Wagon party members could relive the Oregon Trail. Players could hunt for food by strategically pressing the spacebar to launch a bullet toward a tiny deer, risk drowning during a river crossing or die of the dreaded dysentery. Color versions of this game were developed as computer technology progressed.

GERING — A familiar name was atop the leaderboard in the Don Childs Memorial 5-mile run Friday morning. Sara (Ensrud) Vaughn was the overall top female for the second time in the past three years and third overall in a decade. The former standout cross country and track athlete at Gering and University of Colorado finished the course in 30 minutes, 28 seconds, on a weekend in which she returned to her hometown for her 20th high school reunion.
Oregon Trail Days off to a fun start: Kiddie Parade pulls in 574 participants
“It was huge this year,” Oregon Trail Days Kiddie Parade organizer Lisa Betz-Marque said of the annual parade that has become a tradition celebrating tiny tots and their eclectic array of creative bents during festivities. There were nearly 600 children who entered the parade, she said, and even more more people walked the route she said, adding that 30 West Nebraska Pioneers baseball players and a contingency of Nebraska State Patrol troopers were among those walking the route Friday morning.
