The future is now... and some people don't like that. In case you missed it, stores and companies have started rolling out robot delivery systems. Those have mostly come in two different forms: 1) Automated robots on wheels that roll around and drop things off at people's homes 2) Drones For this story, we'll stay focused in on drones. Particularly one drone that was shot down by - you guessed it - a Florida man. As the story goes, Walmart was testing out their new delivery drones by doing door-to-door mock deliveries. The outreach program was hopeful and sought to gain the trust and interest of residents in the Lake County neighborhood. Since the drone got shot, I'd say the "outreach initiative" didn't exactly go according to their plan. The Walmart employees were reportedly standing at one home waiting for the delivery drone to descend when they heard a loud gunshot. That shot was fired by the older neighbor next door, who thought that the drone was "spying on him." Soon after, Walmart alerted authorities, who then reported to the 72-year-old Florida man's home to ask him a couple of questions. Dennis Winn was there waiting, and admitted that he was the one who fired at the drone with his handgun. The flying device was able to make it back to the Walmart it took off from, but it apparently suffered over $2,500 in damages to its payload system. And the Florida man allegedly only fired one shot at the drone... and I've got to be honest for second, it's somewhat impressive that he hit it. And it sounds like even Winn was impressed with his accuracy, telling police on the bodycam video:
"They say I hit it so I must be a good shot." What a legend. However, his sharpshooting didn't win (no last name pun intended) him any awards. Instead, Winn was arrested and faces a plethora of charges, including shooting at an aircraft, discharging a firearm on public or residential property, and criminal mischief. Because the FAA puts aircrafts and drones in the same class, it's possible Winn could face felony charges for shooting at the Walmart delivery device (though that strict of prosecution is rare). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTkhm5kjJt0
