The story behind the law that’s keeping a splash pad in Toledo shut down
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The Savage Park splash pad hasn’t been open this year because it’s not in compliance with a state regulation. Makenna’s Law, which took effect in Ohio in April 2023, says water pressure can’t harm any patrons and the flow rate through a feature nozzle can’t exceed twenty feet per second.
Adams Street Block Party draws a crowd to UpTown Toledo
Vendors and families took to Adams Street in UpTown Toledo Saturday to play games, celebrate the summer weather, and support local businesses and artists during the 10th annual Adams Street Block Party. “We just happened to stumble in to it,” Edie Munoz, 43, who lives in downtown, said as she rummaged through House of Dow with a drink and friend. House of Dow offered a discount on its goods, an incentive to take a break from the heat outside and peruse wares, but outside, kiddie pools full of water balloons awaited their fabled battle, Village on Adams members taxied attendees up and down the street in golf carts, and $5 could buy you three chances at sinking Mac Driscoll, a Toledo City Council member, into a vat of water. While not there in his “official” capacity Mr. Driscoll said he was invited by the the event’s organizer, the Village on Adams, and was happy to aid in convincing many there to pay the entrance fee to take a few throws at him.

The agency’s board of directors approved Thursday an agreement with the Ohio Department of Development to receive the state grant. After deducting a $10,000 administrative fee, the port will then turn the money over to the Bon Secours Mercy Health Foundation, which is coordinating the lighting project’s financing. 'True display of strength and weakness': Locals react to 1st presidential debate
The first presidential debate took place in Atlanta Thursday night, and for some viewers the candidates performed just as expected; for others, the night was full of surprises. “I think it was a true display of strength and weakness,” said Ron Murphy, president of the Greater Toledo Republican Club. President Biden, 81, and former President Donald Trump, 78, took the stage in a debate hosted by CNN. For Trump, it was important to ease concerns to undecided voters that the outspoken candidate can return to office, especially because of his recent criminal conviction. For Mr. Biden, it was important to mitigate worries about his age and mental capacity, which have been a concern from both parties. Melissa Miller, a professor of political science at Bowling Green State University, said the incumbent did not succeed.

Editorial: Don’t endanger children
The mayor’s bravado over the Savage Park Splash Pad, as reported by WTVG-TV, Channel 13’s Alexis Means, made for some interesting news coverage last week. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz vowed he would have the splash pad re-opened within a week, even if that puts him at odds with the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, and even if it means he has to go to jail. Read more Blade editorials If the mayor’s technical advisers believe the splash pad equipment is safe enough to be used, then it’s on them.

Perrysburg schools getting clean school buses through federal funding
Perrysburg school district is expanding its fleet of school buses, but they won’t be fueled by diesel. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the school district $400,000 toward the purchase of 16 propane buses. These buses emit fewer emissions than the typical diesel-fueled school bus. “With the recent purchase of these buses, we will become a mostly propane bus district,” Perrysburg Superintendent Tom Hosler said. The school district was previously awarded funding in 2019 to purchase 12 propane buses and has added four more since. James Mapus, the executive director of operations for Perrysburg, said they are adding even more because of the impact on the community.
