2024 high school football: Preseason All-Blade player of the year watch list
As the 2024 high school football season gets set to kick off next Friday, The Blade is taking a look into the crystal ball to speculate on which area players have the best chance to be honored as the 30th All-Blade player of the year come late November. The first player honored as Blade player of the year back in 1995 was Eddie Ziemke of St. John’s Jesuit, one of three Titans players to receive that recognition alongside Cheatham Norrils in 2010 and Dallas Gant in 2017. Perrysburg has had the most Blade POY honorees with four — Gus Dimmerling (2014), Chaz Westfall (2015), Cade Zimmerly (2020), and Connor Walendzak (2022). Central Catholic and Whitmer each match St. John’s with three apiece.

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Toledo men's basketball program's 2024-25 schedule is complete with the release of its 18-game Mid-American Conference slate by the league office on Wednesday. The conference office will release a full men's basketball television schedule at a later date, with games on Saturday potentially being moved to Friday nights.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A local student wants his teammates to know, he has their back. On Aug. 10, Camden Combs hosted a lemonade stand outside his house to raise money for the Reynolds Corners Rams football team, after he heard some of the players couldn’t afford their seasonal fees.
Friday Night Futbol: High school soccer teams embrace spotlight of opening games
High school soccer takes center stage under the Friday night lights this week as teams across northwest Ohio get an early opportunity to highlight the sport, its coaches, and its players. Dozens of area boys and girls soccer teams will participate in the “Friday Night Futbol” event. “Anytime our sport is in the limelight, it's a positive for us all,” Findlay girls coach Mike Aubry said. “I know that our players are really excited about the opportunity to play under the lights and get their season kicked off. Futbol Friday gives us such great publicity around the area.” In 2015, the Ohio High School Athletic Association started the statewide initiative where soccer games take place the Friday before the high school football season kicks off. The OHSAA permits the soccer games to be played one day earlier than the traditional Saturday start of the soccer season.

There’s always one thing you can count on in a college football season: Toledo will be Toledo. Toledo has been somewhat of a standard bearer in the MAC throughout the last decade and counting. The Rockets boast the conference’s longest streak with 14 consecutive seasons finishing .500 or better. They’ve crossed the double-digit win threshold three times since 2015, compiling an 11-3 record as the MAC runner-up in 2023. Although the Rockets fell short of a conference championship in Detroit, they’ve prevailed there before, bringing home recent titles in 2017 and 2022 under head coach Jason Candle.

Kendall Braden was in class at Toledo Christian when she learned the news: Tricia Cullop was leaving Toledo for the University of Miami. Destiny Robinson was 41 miles away at Fremont Ross. Both girls had a similar shocked reaction. They had been around the UT women’s basketball program long before committing to the Rockets, growing close to the coaching staff. Suddenly, they didn’t know if they were homeless or wanted to go elsewhere. “It was definitely hard for me because I just love coach Cullop and the whole staff,” Braden said. “I’ve known them since the eighth grade.”

Thomas Farrell re-signs with the Fish for 2024-25
(Toledo, OH) – Defenseman Thomas Farrell will return to the Pond for a third season in Toledo after agreeing to terms for the 2024-25 ECHL season. Farrell, of Lake Bluff, IL, skated in 28 games this past season for the Walleye, tallying six points (2G, 4A) and two penalty minutes. He has spent his entire pro career with the Fish, accumulating eight points (3G, 5A) and two penalty minutes in 32 ECHL games in parts of two seasons that included his pro debut that came in the 2022-2023 season.

Mize solid for Mud Hens in loss at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE — Casey Mize pitched 3⅓ shutout innings in his second rehab start, but the Toledo Mud Hens struggled offensively and gave up three runs with their bullpen in a 3-1 loss to the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday. Mize, the Detroit Tigers pitcher working his way back from a hamstring injury, pitched Thursday in Toledo against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and returned to the mound for the opener of this week’s six-game series at Truist Field. He gave up one hit with three strikeouts and one walk against the Knights, with the hit coming in the fourth inning against the final batter he faced. Toledo (54-60) opened the scoring in the top of the fourth when Spencer Torkelson hit a solo home run to left field. CHARLOTTE — The Toledo Mud Hens managed only four hits and fell to the Charlotte Knights 3-2 in 10 innings on Thursday at Truist Field. The Mud Hens went quietly in the top of the 10th, failing to advance automatic runner Riley Unroe from second base. In the bottom half, Charlotte’s Bryan Ramos laced a two-out, walk-off single up the middle off Devin Sweet (7-6). Zach DeLoach scored from second as the winning run. Charlotte pitchers combined to retire the final 12 Toledo batters in order, with Aaron McGarity (8-1) pitching the final two innings to get the victory.
