Remembering Memorial Day and celebrating start of summer

It’s Memorial Day weekend, which can mean different things for folks.

• Memorial ceremonies pay tribute to servicemen and servicewomen who died while serving.
• Parades kindle a spirit of patriotism and celebration.
• Barbecues, gardening and Up North getaways mark what many consider the onset of summer.
• As a native Hoosier, it means the running of the Indy 500.

• 97-year-old veteran Richard Masters of East Lansing recently talked about his experience in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Masters is among a dwindling population. It's estimated that 16 million Americans served during World War II, but as of 2023, fewer than 120,000 were still alive.
• East Lansing marked the holiday with wreath-laying ceremony on Wednesday.
• Michigan State rededicated the Grove of the Great War on Thursday.
