One house stands out among the many historical landmarks in Charleston, South Carolina, with the Pink House being the oldest home in the city. How old is this home? 1688 - making this piece of architecture the second oldest house in the United States. The house opened in 1712 in the French Quarter and sits on what is now known as 17 Chalmers Street.

John Breton built the Pink House with West Indian Coral stone, giving the home its unique color. Standing on one of Charleston’s original cobblestone streets, it continues to turn the heads of tourists visiting the city for the first time. The first floor is thirteen feet by thirteen feet. Over the centuries, the house has been repurposed into many things, ranging from a brothel to a law office. It was even an art gallery at one point in time.

Between the age of the home and the front door welcoming so many individuals with such an unlucky number, one must wonder if this place has any mysteries around the corner. Well, as a matter of fact, Yes. This house is haunted.

The Pink House holds multiple ghosts, one of them being a female apparition that stays on the top floor. She is known to pace back and forth, sometimes catching people’s attention as she does so. Some witnesses claim they see the woman’s identity, attributing her to a famous pirate named Anne Bonny. Anne passed away in Charleston, South Carolina, on April 22, 1782.

Employees have heard footsteps climbing the stairs during the day, with the footsteps continuing throughout the night. There have been rumors that people say they can hear their name being called with nobody present. Others who have visited the Pink House in the past have said they feel an unnerving presence staring at them that they feel compelled to leave.

The Pink House is not currently open to the public, but visitors will still notice spirits showing themselves in the windows.

With such a vibrant name, one would believe the Pink House is a happy little place, but the spirits that occupy this residence are far from cute.

Charleston is the most haunted city in South Carolina. If you haven't visited, perhaps you should take a walk down the dark side of our history and past. It will make you see PINK before losing your mind.
