Your Candidate: Randal J. Hill District 25

EAU CLAIRE — Candidate Randal J. Hill said it was awful that his district didn’t have anyone on the ballot in the last week of December.

Hill is a candidate for the Eau Claire County District 25 supervisor seat. He is running against Christy Tomczak.

District 25 is made up of wards 14, 55, and 62 in the City of Eau Claire.

He said he chose to run so there would be at least one person running. He found out Tomczak was also running after he had decided to run and thought it was great his district had two names to choose from.

There is a lot of spending in the county which is a big issue, said Hill. One specific aspect of the budget he hoped to change was the wheel tax.

“The wheel tax has caused a lot of friction for the county…” he said. “I don’t think we should have that friction in our community for that $30 wheel tax.”

To address the wheel tax he said he hoped to set up a system for people to request a refund for the tax.

“Anybody that feels uncomfortable with the wheel tax can just go down to the county treasurer and ask for a refund on it,” said Hill. “If you like the wheel tax, don’t ask for a refund.”

Another concern the candidate had about the wheel tax was its effect on people with fixed incomes, like retirees. He said with other taxes and costs retirees can be hurt with an additional $30 tax.

Hill is an enrolled agent and owner of Hill’s Tax Service. He said he has worked with small business people for more than 40 years.

“I have a lot of input and feelings on how a small company runs. I think that’s a good experience to try to help out with the county board,” he said.

He said he prepares the tax returns for “thousands of people” in the county each year and talks to them.

“That’s going to give me insight on what’s going on with the community which nobody else is going to get,” said Hill. “I sit down with every one of these people.”

He said that he also has experience helping individuals and small companies, especially when they are being treated unfairly by larger organizations like the government or bigger companies.

One example he mentioned was helping when Amish people were being evicted for not having smoke or carbon dioxide detectors. He found out about the problem by doing tax returns and reached out to a representative.

“We got the law changed so Amish don’t have to worry about having those modern devices in their homes,” said Hill.

He said through his experiences he knows when money is not being spent correctly. He can bring this skill to the county.
