(Lewis) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is asking for the public’s help with its wild turkey production survey for July and August. John Lorenzen, with the DNR Office in Lewis, says participants are to note the date and the county where the turkey was seen, mark down if it is an adult female or male, and indicate the number of poults present. Lorenzen says the DNR uses the information to gauge next year’s population in part by nest success.

Lorenzen says the males will have beards; the females will not. The females have feathers along the neck up to the head, and the males have far fewer neck feathers.

Lorenzen says people interested in reporting turkey sitings can fill out the survey on the Iowa Department of Natural Resources website.
