Flag Football Game of the Week: Foxy Mamas Open Season with Big Win

SOMERS, N.Y. - On Thursday, June 27, the Westchester Female Flag Football League football season opened, and on the far end of the field, the Foxy Mamas of Lewisboro faced the Innuendos of Somers.

Wearing the standard John Jay purple, the footballers exuded the same pride. “We’re all working, we’re all moms and we’re all foxy,” said Leah Jacobson. But the game was still up for grabs at 13-6 in the second half, so more than words were needed to bring home the bacon.

“I just went for it,” said Renee Mattiello, and her pick six had the Mamma’s sitting pretty with a 19-6 victory.

The game opened with the Mama’s scoring too. Jacobson took the reins and got on her horse with a completion to Rhea Johnson and a delayed scramble to midfield.

Third and one, the short game wasn’t on the quarterback’s mind. She hit Meg Kelly at the 15, and the run and pass play of the signal caller was no surprise to Liz Hill. “She has a really good eye on the field,” said the receiver. “She’s patient, she’s calm and she’s fast.”

Jacobson was then mutual in the admiration department.  She hit Hill at the ten, and next in the end zone. “Sticky fingers,” the QB dubbed her tall receiver.

The conversion failing, the Innuendos took their turn and didn’t stand still either. Jamie Marro dropped one into Kelly Dougherty and then Dougherty ran wide for a spot near midfield. A third and five, Marro’s sneak put the Tusker ladies 20 yards away.  But a fumble, Amy Civetta’s deflection in the end zone, and another incomplete pass turned the ball over.

That left Jacobson to do her thing again. On second down, the QB found Johnson across midfield and went over the top to her tall, sure fingered receiver again. “Liz is awesome,” said Jacobson. “I always know where she is, and she always catches the ball.”

Now second down, the Mama’s were flagged for an illegal block on a fake double reverse to the left. So not bothered, the offense switched directions. They outfoxed and ran the play the other way.

Ten yards away, Jacobson switched field all by herself to get six more. The QB started left, and in cutting all the way back for the right corner of the end zone, she was happy for the chance to spread her wings. “The indoor season is a confined space, so it’s nice to be outside,” Jacobson assured.

13-0 on the two point conversation, and the defense stacked high at first. Three plays going nowhere, the Innuendo’s climbed the ladder on fourth down. Marro dropped back and Erica Cosentino reached up above the field.

She pulled the ball in for the first down, and then Marro had the happy feet. Daylight ahead, the gyrations had the QB making hay, but Mattiello was able to snag the flag at the eight.

30 seconds left in the half and Marro flexed her arm. Up went her pass and Cosentino landed underneath, but the competition was ruled out of bounds. One more chance, the Mama’s didn’t break and took the 13 point lead into the half.

The ball to Innuendo to start the second, and the Foxy Mamma’s got the bends again on defense. Undeterred when Lauren Romano connected on high twice with Luisa Marcano, the Mama’s didn’t shrink either when Marro swept the sideline to the seven.

Whitney Hartmann had the third down deflection in the end zone, and the defense made no apologies for the break received on fourth down. The snap was fumbled, and the ball was turned over on downs.

Unfortunately, the offense did not answer, and the Innuendo’s finally broke through.  Two completions earned a third and three near midfield, and Romano went long to Dougherty to make it a 13-6 game.

So a score still putting the game away, the Foxes came up short. On fourth and three, Jacobson’s keeper didn’t reach midfield, so the defense was on alert. “We were talking about getting an interception,” said Mattiello, and the talk was definitely not cheap.

The cornerback made the grab, and eluded the Innuendo’s. Smiles all around, the Foxy Mamma’s celebrated, and on the sideline, one member of the fan base proudly exhibited more than chill. “That was pretty cool,” concluded Renee’s daughter Abby Mattiello.
