A 23-year-old man who was shot Monday night while driving in Lexington Park has died, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday morning.

The motorist has been identified by investigators as Malic Quinn Freeland. According to a sheriff’s office spokesperson, his family lives in Lusby.

The vehicle Freeland had been driving crashed into a fence and shed near Valley Drive and Fox Ridge Road, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

“First responders began providing aid to the driver and it was discovered the victim had a gunshot wound,” the press release stated.

Freeland was taken to a regional shock trauma center, where he died Tuesday.

An autopsy will be performed at the office of the state’s chief medical examiner in Baltimore.

Sheriff’s office spokesperson Alisa Casas confirmed that no suspect information has been developed by investigators, nor has a motive for the shooting been established at this time.

The investigation is being handled by Detective Benjamin Raley.

Anyone with information that could aid investigators is asked to contact Raley at 301-375-4200, ext. 8076 or email him at Benjamin.Raley@stmaryscountymd.gov.
