Carlinville Council holds second July meeting
The Carlinville Council met Monday, July 15 for its second monthly meeting. Several items were discussed at the meeting inlcuding project updates and upcoming events. Unhinged Motorcycle Club submitted a request to close off the first block of East Main Street on July 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the H.E.I.D.I. Charity Run.
Carlinville’s Hannah Gibson qualifies for Junior Olympics
Last weekend, Carlinville High School athlete Hannah Gibson qualified for the USATF Junior Olympics, which will take place at Texas A&M University. She placed third overall in a highly-competitive 17-18 age group by setting a new personal record of 146’ 2” in the hammer throw. Gibson also had the privilege of meeting superstar hammer thrower Erin Reese, who is currently representing the United States at the Paris Summer Olympics. Photos contributed.
Spillway fails, levy fractured on Hubbard Lake in rural Centralia
Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps says the spillway has failed and the levee is in fractured status at Hubbard Lake off of Lake Road in rural Centralia. He says the flooding area of concern is six-tenths of a mile south of State Route 161 on Race Track Rd. If you travel to this area, please use caution.

Madison County Workers Memorial spared by sinkhole
Alton, IL – The earth opened up here June 26 and swallowed half a soccer field and a light pole, but it didn’t take the Madison County Workers Memorial with it. Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Ill. made national news when a collapsed mine caused a giant sinkhole to appear in the middle of a soccer field that had recently undergone a $1 million renovation. The sinkhole measured 100 feet across in the center of the soccer complex, and 50 feet deep according to the Belleville News-Democrat.
