A North Jersey woman was among two people killed in a plane that crashed in Maine Thursday , hours after departing a Morris County airport, authorities said.

Christina Chung, 57, of Livingston, was a passenger in the single-engine Cirrus SR22 piloted by 71-year-old Michael Leibowitz, of Charleston, South Carolina, when it crashed and caught fire just off the runway at Hancock-Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton, Maine, said Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The plane took off from Morristown Municipal Airport around 10:16 a.m. with the two aboard and crashed on approach near the end of the runway shortly before 12:30 p.m.

"The single engine aircraft had caught fire upon impact and was destroyed," Moss said.

The plane is registered to Miller High Life Aviation, FAA records show. It was not immediately clear on Friday who owns that company.

The plane had made seven trips since July 17, and had last flown from Farmingdale, New York, to the Morristown airport Wednesday evening before departing Morristown on Thursday, according to FlightAware .

Reports say it was very foggy at the airport on Thursday afternoon, although it remains unknown what caused the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
