Car Fire in Underground Garage at Union Stop & Shop Sunday Night
UNION, NJ – An automatic fire alerted Union firefighters to the Stop & Shop at 1201 Stuyvesant Avenue on Sunday night. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully involved vehicle on fire in the underground parking garage, causing heavy smoke. Union Fire Chief Greg Ricciardi said the store above was searched and evacuated. Firefighters stretched a hose to extinguish the fire and the sprinkler system activated, which helped smother the fire, he said. He said the business is expected to be closed until repairs are made to the sprinkler system. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
