Forecasters are keeping their eyes to the skies as another round of severe storms are predicted to impact the Joliet area once again. The National Weather Service has placed the entire WJOL listening area in the Moderate (Level 4/5) risk, with all modes of wind, hail and tornadoes possible. Central Illinois Weather Update: Scattered Storms and Cooler Temperatures Ahead
Lincoln, IL – Severe thunderstorms are expected across central Illinois today, primarily south of a Taylorville to Danville line. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln issued an alert for scattered storms, which could bring damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall. Cooler and drier air is forecasted to follow, offering relief for the latter half of the week.
Severe weather slams central Illinois, again
For the second time in as many nights, damaging winds caused widespread damage and power outages. The storms Monday night resulted in staggering wind gusts. A corn crib was destroyed by a 105 mile per hour wind gust near Camp Grove in Marshall County. South Pekin clocked a 78 mile per hour wind gust, Elmwood 71 mph and Lewistown 70 mph. Wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour were common over most of the area. Several communities reported wind damage with the main problem being trees and tree limbs knocking down power lines and causing roads and streets to be blocked. We’ll get a better idea of damage when it’s daylight. The Monday night storms hit as some communities were cleaning up from storms Sunday night which caused damage in Henry and Bloomington.
