ISAC Hosts 14th Annual College Changes Everything Conference
CHICAGO – The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) and statewide partners will host the 14th annual College Changes Everything® (CCE) Conference: Community Health Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Tinley Park Convention Center. The state’s premier annual college access event will focus this year on the role community health plays in advancing educational equity for Illinois students and families. Diverse professionals and stakeholders will come together to learn and collaborate to support college access and success and career readiness.

$1.15B Great Lakes dam project enters construction phase
The states of Michigan and Illinois signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to cosponsor construction of the $1.15 billion Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which will prevent invasive carp and other aquatic nuisance species from entering the Great Lakes, per a July 1 news release from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office.

The men’s 1500 free went to Aquajets Swim Team 17-year-old Jiarui Xue, who finished in 15:57.10. Xue, a Princeton recruit, has been quite a bit faster, holding a personal best of 15:38.14, which he swam at the NCSA Championships in March. Ozaukee Aquatics 14-year-old Grant Freeze had a fantastic swim for 4th in the mile, clocking a 16:13.24, which marks a new personal best by nearly 24 seconds.
Storm-Induced Fire Results in $150,000 Damage to Naperville Home
Naperville, IL – A late-night fire caused significant damage to a home in the 2000 block of Schumacher Lane in Naperville. The incident occurred at 11:29 p.m. on Sunday. According to the Naperville Emergency Communications Center, the fire prompted a general alarm response, with multiple fire units dispatched to the scene. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames visible from the roof. The occupants safely evacuated before the fire department’s arrival. The fire, caused by a storm, resulted in $150,000 in damages and rendered the home uninhabitable. There were no reported injuries.

American Legion’s door shattered again amid its closure
Police were dispatched July 8 to 500 Circle Avenue for a report of criminal damage to Forest Park’s American Legion. As American Legion Post 414 prepares for closure, members are clearing out the building for future buyers, according to the police report. While someone was in the process of removing items from the building, he noticed the glass pane in the front door was shattered, officials said. This is not the first time something like this has happened, as earlier this year, the American Legion’s front door was shattered with a BB gun. There was no sign of entry and no items stolen, according to the police report. The estimated cost of repair is $700.
