Lonsdale residents planning to get tipsy for the Fourth of July are going to need to find a designated driver, because no major celebrations are taking place in town this year.

This is true for several towns in the area, and the number of towns with Fourth of July festivities appears to be shrinking. However, there are some events in nearby communities, plus a celebration of freedom in Lonsdale the week after Independence Day.

Lonsdale used to have a “terrific” Fourth of July celebration and fireworks show, but Mayor Tim Rud said costs simply became too much. He said there were many volunteers, whether individuals or organizations, who helped make the fireworks possible for the many years it was held.

“Unfortunately, due to high costs of fireworks, insurance and setup costs, it has become difficult to raise enough funds to have a fireworks show,” he said. “… Also, the need of a certified pyro-technician. To cover the cost in the past, there was a specific fundraiser for the fireworks show. While there is nothing specific planned for that day, the Fourth of July is always a great day to celebrate America’s independence.”

There are still several way to celebrate that independence, but it may take some gas money.

The Veseli parade is among the biggest losses for the area’s Fourth of July enthusiasts in recent years. In the Lonsdale Area News Review archives, photos indicate the parade was well attended and highly anticipated each year until the pandemic, which Veseli Area Lions Club President Jennifer Malecha said led to the event’s downfall.

The 131st North Morristown Fourth of July Celebration might supplement the local festivities for Lonsdale residents. Several area residents on Facebook attest to the North Morristown celebration for its fireworks show, its musical performances, pies, ice cream, games and more.

As usual, this year’s fireworks in Faribault are at 10 p.m. July 4 at the Rice County Fairgrounds, but will be moved to the following night in the event of rain.

New Prague’s celebration is 10 p.m. July 3, east of New Prague Middle School. The event is organized by the American Legion Post 45 and will have a few food trucks on site.

The Northfield fireworks display will be held 10 p.m. July 4 at Northfield Middle School. Viewing areas near the fireworks display include Northfield Middle School parking lot and south fields, Tyler Park, and the fields north of Jefferson Parkway.

Windy Willow, located at 9748 110th St. E in rural Northfield, has a view of nearly all, if not all, the fireworks displays in the area. This year, the “agritainment” center is upping the ante with food trucks, its own fireworks and even a big foam gun, all for $5 admission with a $25 cap per family.
