Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has responded to a woman's claim that he called her a racial slur.

On Tuesday (June 25), Duke University alumni Halleemah Nash alleged that Redick called her the N-word during his time on the school's basketball team.

"I've only been called the N word to my face by a white man once in my life and it was on the campus of Duke University while I was doing work with the basketball team," Nash tweeted. "And today he was named the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. What a world."

In a follow-up tweet, Nash said of the incident: “This was years ago and Im a believer that we all have space to grow – especially from our college level maturity.”

A spokesperson for Redick denied the claim in a statement to TMZ .

"No, it never happened," the spokesperson said.

The allegation comes after Redick, a longtime NBA player turned ESPN analyst, was named the Lakers' new head coach on Monday (June 24). Redick reportedly signed a four-year contract with the franchise after former head coach Darvin Ham was fired last month.

The former NBA player starred at Duke from 2002 to 2006 before declaring for the draft.
