The San Jose Sharks have traded defenseman Kyle Burroughs to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Carl Grundstrom.

Burroughs was signed as a free agent in 2023 after playing for the Vancouver Canucks. He signed a three-year deal with San Jose but will now play year two with the Kings.

The 28-year-old played 73 games and had two goals and six assists. He was a solid veteran player for the young Sharks team, but ultimately, a change in the defense core is underway.

Moving Burroughs opens up more room for newly acquired Jake Walman and possibly for Shakir Mukhamadullin to have a full-time NHL spot.

Grundstrom, 26, is a big-body winger who is responsible around all areas of the ice. In 50 games last season, Grundstrom had eight goals and four assists. He has played 17 career postseason games.

The Swede has a shoot-first mentality, which fits what the Sharks need in the bottom-six forwards of the lineup. With Barclay Goodrow, Ty Delandrea, and other 3rd-4th line forwards, Grundstrom can chip in occasionally.

Grundstrom is an RFA and does have arbitration rights. San Jose must offer him a $1.3 million qualifying offer to retain his rights.
