Dodgers to ‘Keep Pursuing’ Garrett Crochet After Rejected Trade Offer

The Los Angeles Dodgers are annually among the contending teams making a big splash as the MLB trade deadline nears. This year, the Dodgers might seek a game-changer in their rotation in advance of the July 30 deadline. The top starter on this year’s market could be White Sox southpaw ace Garrett Crochet.

Crochet has been linked to the Dodgers these past few months, and Los Angeles has a great chance to land the young left-handed pitcher. Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain spoke with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, and he mentioned that the Dodgers have already made an offer for Crochet, but the White Sox turned it down.

“They made an offer, too, for Garrett Crochet of the White Sox. White Sox turned down the offer, it wasn’t enough. But he’s kind of an X-Factor. Crochet has already pitched 15 more innings than his career-high, so are you gonna even have the guy available in September and October? If you do, it would probably be in a limited bullpen role.”

It’s unclear what kind of offer the Dodgers made for Crochet. The White Sox rejected the Dodgers; however, that shouldn’t stop them from pursuing the southpaw. Nightengale went on to say that the Dodgers might only amp up their pursuit trying to acquire Crochet this month.

“I think they’ll just keep pursuing him until he’s traded. You know the Dodgers have never traded away that stud prospect that’s come back to haunt them, so they’ve been good about that. And I think the White Sox say, ‘You know what, we’ve got 15 teams on this guy, we know he’s a valuable asset, we want to hurt, and we want someone’s top two or three guys to give up a Crochet.’ He’s only making $800,000, you got him through 2026.”

While Crochet would be an excellent fit for the Dodgers, who desperately need a tremendous lefty arm, some risk comes with his potential to join any rotation. Crochet has already reached a career-high in innings pitched, 105.1 this season and counting.

His previous career high came in 2021, when he pitched 54.1 innings exclusively out of the White Sox bullpen. Thus far, he’s started in 19 games, and there’s a massive worry about whether he can remain healthy and if this level of performance is sustainable.

Nonetheless, there’s no denying Crochet’s skill set and what he’s accomplished thus far. The 25-year-old has recorded a 6-6 record with a 3.08 ERA, 146 strikeouts, an opponents’ batting average of .203, and a 0.97 WHIP while throwing 1,691 pitches. A potential trade for Crochet is a high-risk, high-reward proposition, and the reward could outweigh the risk.
