Could the Los Angeles Chargers swing a blockbuster deal for Brandon Aiyuk?

The Aiyuk saga has reached a potential breaking point, as he has requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. Aiyuk and the 49ers had failed contract negotiations, which prompted the trade request.

The 26-year-old wide receiver has now become a hot name on the trade market. While the 49ers may not secure Aiyuk long-term, they’re going to need a lot of value in return if they do move him.

San Francisco made it all the way to the Super Bowl last season, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.

If the 49ers were to trade Aiyuk, they would likely be reluctant to move him to another NFC team. This leaves the Chargers as a potential destination.

Los Angeles lost Keenan Allen and Mike Williams this offseason, leaving a hole at the receiver position. Acquiring Aiyuk as a weapon for Justin Herbert could be highly beneficial for the upcoming season and in the long term.

With that said, let’s break down how the Chargers can land Aiyuk.

Chargers land Aiyuk in 3-team deal

Broncos get: TE Donald Parham Jr. (Los Angeles), 2025 third-round pick (Los Angeles)

Chargers get: WR Brandon Aiyuk (San Francisco)

49ers get: WR Courtland Sutton (Denver), 2025 second-round pick (Los Angeles)

In the deal laid out by Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, Aiyuk would head to the Chargers in a rare three-team trade. A previous three-team deal of note happened in the 1980s when the Los Angeles Rams moved the disgruntled Eric Dickerson.

The Chargers would send out a second-round pick to the 49ers, along with a third-round pick, and tight end Donald Parham Jr. to the Broncos.

For the Broncos, they ship off veteran receiver Courtland Sutton and receive a second-round pick. Acquiring more draft capital could make sense amid a rebuild with rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

The 49ers lose a key piece in Aiyuk in the trade, but landing Sutton gives them a replacement receiver to help them contend while also acquiring a third-round pick.

Meanwhile, the Chargers would land their star receiver who could be Herbert’s top weapon for years to come.

Aiyuk hauled in 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in the 2023-24 season. The star wideout would take pressure off young receivers like Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston in Los Angeles.

The Chargers are entering their first season with Jim Harbaugh as their head coach. With a talented young quarterback in Herbert and now a reliable coach, Los Angeles should pursue a trade for Brandon Aiyuk to maximize their talent.
