Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the age of the deceased, due to incorrect information from Louisville Metro Police. The victim was 26 years old.

A woman died after she was struck by a vehicle in the Russell neighborhood Saturday night, Louisville Metro Police said Sunday. Police are looking for the driver of the vehicle, who left the scene shortly after the collision.

Around 11:55 p.m., officers from the First Division arrived to find the woman down at 16th and Jefferson Streets, LMPD spokesperson John Bradley said in a statement.

Officers rendered aid until EMS arrived. The woman was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.

LMPD's traffic unit is investigating the incident, Bradley said. Police believe a white sedan, possibly a Mazda, headed south on 16th Street after striking the woman "at a high rate of speed" in the roadway. Anyone with information about the incident can contact 502-574-LMPD.

LMPD did not identify the woman in its statement. Bradley told The Courier Journal the Jefferson County Coroner's Office would release the woman's name following an autopsy.
