BOSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police troopers are looking out for distracted drivers on a stretch of I-96 in Ionia County that is under construction.

Recently, a series of rear-end crashes have been caused by drivers who are not paying attention in the construction zone on I-96 where traffic is narrowed down to just one lane, according to police.

On July 8 , several of those crashes happened in both directions of the highway between Alden Nash Avenue and Morrison Lake Road southeast of Lowell. One included a jackknifed semi. Injuries were reported when one vehicle was rear-ended.

Both marked and unmarked MSP vehicles will be stationed in the construction zone looking out for drivers who are not paying attention. Some may be lookout vehicles who will notify their partners to stop a driver.

“We want word to get out that the person traveling next to or behind you along this section of I-96 could be a trooper in an unmarked car looking for violators. Drivers should also be aware that traffic fines in construction zones are higher than in other areas,” MSP wrote in a release.
