    Meet the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's 2024 softball Super Team

    NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

    Sydnee Gomez, Fr., pitcher, Snyder

    Gomez set a high bar for herself after a freshman campaign that included a trip to the region quarterfinals.

    A Class 4A all-state selection by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, Gomez went 15-2 with a 1.84 ERA and 183 strikeouts in 117⅔ innings. She was named District 5-4A pitcher of the year.

    Gomez also batted .432 with a .471 on-base percentage, tallying 16 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 37 RBI.

    COACH OF THE YEAR

    Brian Cronk, Monterey

    Despite the graduation of 2023 player of the year Alexis Lusk, the Monterey program kept up its recent tradition.

    Cronk guided the Plainsmen to the region semifinals for a fourth consecutive season. Before the current streak, Monterey had never made it past the second round.

    The Plainsmen finished 26-15-2 overall. They won a share of the championship of District 4-5A, which had all four of its playoff teams reach the third round.

    FIRST TEAM

    Lexi Clark, Jr., pitcher/outfielder, Frenship

    The District 2-6A MVP, Clark went 11-4 with a 1.90 ERA and 157 strikeouts. She allowed opponents a .176 average. She hit .394 with a .436 OBP and .642 slugging percentage. Clark finished with six doubles, three triples, five home runs, 25 RBI and 17 stolen bases.

    Micaela Martinez, Jr., catcher, Snyder

    Martinez made the TGCA 4A all-state team after hitting .522 with a .612 OBP, 15 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 40 RBI. She had a .994 fielding percentage with 305 putouts.

    Hayley Neuman, Sr., first baseman, Monterey

    Neuman, an Odessa College signee, batted .395 with a .494 OBP and .766 slugging percentage. She totaled seven doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 51 RBI and 43 runs. Neuman also had a .932 fielding percentage with 227 putouts and 18 assists.

    Whitlee Blacklock, So., second baseman, Lubbock Christian

    Blacklock hit .575 with a .696 OBP and 1.20 slugging percentage. She tallied eight doubles, 12 triples, six home runs, 42 RBI and 71 runs. Blacklock also had a .953 fielding percentage with 55 putouts and 26 assists.

    Lydia Pesterfield, Jr., third baseman, Lubbock-Cooper

    Pesterfield was named District 4-5A MVP and TGCA all-state. She hit .387 with a .474 OBP and .752 slugging percentage. She had 14 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 40 RBI. Pesterfield made 91 putouts with a .938 fielding percentage.

    Emma Davis, Sr., pitcher/shortstop, Shallowater

    Davis, the District 2-3A MVP, batted .598 with a 1.14 slugging percentage and 67 RBI. In addition to a .901 fielding percentage, Davis was 25-7 with a 1.85 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 107⅔ innings.

    Carisa Fernandez, Sr., outfielder, Floydada

    Fernandez, the District 3-2A MVP and TGCA all-state selection, batted .559 with a .672 OBP and 1.16 slugging percentage. She finished with 17 doubles, nine triples, seven home runs, 44 RBI, 59 runs, 29 walks and 30 stolen bases. She had a .945 fielding percentage.

    Saydi Mendez, Jr., outfielder, Levelland

    Mendez notched 60 hits with a .583 average and .617 OBP. The District 5-4A defensive MVP also had 13 doubles, eight triples, two home runs, 27 RBI, 62 runs and 21 stolen bases. Mendez's fielding percentage was .904.

    Rylee O'Brien, Sr., outfielder, Monterey

    O'Brien earned District 4-5A offensive MVP after hitting .462 with a .532 OBP and .883 slugging percentage. The Western Michigan signee totaled 67 hits, including a school-record 19 doubles, six triples and 10 home runs. She finished with 42 RBI and 52 runs. O'Brien had a .918 fielding percentage with 42 putouts and three assists.

    Lainey Gibson, Fr., utility, Lubbock-Cooper Liberty

    Gibson was District 2-3A offensive player of the year with a .724 average, 2.32 OPS and 1.54 slugging percentage. She tallied 20 doubles, nine triples, 11 home runs, 52 RBI and 47 runs. Gibson also notched 138 strikeouts in 125 innings and had a .965 fielding percentage with 25 putouts, 58 assists and three double plays.

    SPARKS OFF THE BENCH

    Andraya Armendariz, Sr., outfielder, Seminole

    Armendariz, a Wayland Baptist signee, had a .985 fielding percentage with five assists. She also hit .420 with two home runs, 19 RBI and 33 runs.

    Kynlee Bowlin, Sr., pitcher, Frenship

    Bowlin posted a 15-4 record with a 2.00 ERA and 151 strikeouts. Opponents batted .176 against her.

    Kolbi McCord, So., third baseman, Slaton

    McCord batted .617 with a 1.15 slugging percentage. She notched three home runs and 64 RBI.

    Anays Perez, Sr., pitcher, Monterey

    Perez, an Odessa College signee, notched 264 strikeouts with a 3.15 ERA and .257 batting average against. She also hit .319 with a .370 OBP and .593 slugging percentage. Perez finished with eight doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 41 RBI.

    Brooklynn Ray, Jr., pitcher, Lubbock-Cooper

    Ray went 16-4 with a 3.00 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 144⅓ innings. She allowed 59 walks and had a 1.39 WHIP.

    SECOND TEAM

    Rexie Sanders, Sr., pitcher, Borden County

    Sanders was district MVP and TGCA all-state. She went 15-7 with a 2.55 ERA and 206 strikeouts. She also batted .603 with a .767 OBP, eight doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBI.

    Brynly Gregory, So., catcher, Sundown

    Gregory hit .597 with a .643 OBP, 26 doubles, eight triples, one home run, 43 RBI, 73 runs and 30 stolen bases. She posted a .992 fielding percentage with 242 putouts and eight caught stealing.

    Kelvie Roberts, Jr., first baseman, Frenship

    Roberts batted .410 with a .500 OBP and .636 slugging percentage. She tallied five doubles, four home runs, and 26 RBI.

    Melanie Benitez, So., second baseman, Lamesa

    Benitez, the District 3-3A defensive MVP, had a .985 fielding percentage with five double plays and a triple play. She hit .493 with four home runs and 36 RBI.

    Angelica Gonzalez, Sr., third baseman, Levelland

    Gonzalez notched 60 hits with a .573 average and .613 OBP. She totaled 12 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 55 RBI, 50 runs and 12 stolen bases. She also had a .938 fielding percentage.

    Jacy McKown, So., shortstop, Lubbock Christian

    McKown hit .568 with a .637 OBP and .968 slugging percentage. She notched 54 hits, including 19 doubles, eight triples and one home run, with 43 RBI and 52 runs. She posted an .886 fielding percentage with 38 putouts and 32 assists.

    McKanna Garcia, So., outfielder, Lubbock-Cooper

    Garcia batted .450 with a .504 OBP and .750 slugging percentage. She totaled 22 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 44 RBI and 37 runs. Garcia's fielding percentage was .834 with 23 putouts and four assists.

    Camry Jourden, So., outfielder, Sundown

    Jourden hit .543 with a .585 OBP, 10 doubles, four triples, 27 RBI, 39 runs and 24 stolen bases. She posted a .977 fielding percentage with 38 putouts and one error.

    Zuri Martinez, So., outfielder, Slaton

    Martinez had a .567 batting average and 1.03 slugging percentage with nine home runs and 46 RBI.

    Ava Aviles, Sr., utility, Snyder

    Aviles hit .532 with a .582 OBP, 20 doubles, five triples, one home run and 38 RBI. She also had a .904 fielding percentage and went 10-3 with a 3.18 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 77 innings pitched.

    SPARKS OFF THE BENCH

    Brinley Currington, Jr., catcher, Shallowater

    Currington hit .504 with a .726 slugging percentage and 31 RBI. She posted a .991 fielding percentage.

    Breigh Gregory, So., pitcher, Sundown

    Gregory was 18-3 with a 3.20 ERA, 162 strikeouts and 27 walks in 122⅔ innings. She batted .566 with a .632 OBP, 19 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 52 RBI, 63 runs and 24 stolen bases. Her fielding percentage was .886 with 33 putouts.

    Alyssa Lozano, Jr., shortstop, Lubbock-Cooper

    Lozano batted .372 with a .438 OBP and .752 slugging percentage. She posted 14 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 52 RBI and 31 runs. She also had a .938 fielding percentage with 60 putouts and 31 assists.

    Madison Pyle, Fr., pitcher, Floydada

    Pyle went 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA and 188 strikeouts in 120⅓ innings. She hit .305 with a .457 OBP and .671 slugging percentage. Pyle totaled five doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 20 RBI, 37 runs and 14 stolen bases.

    Natalia Sanchez, Jr., pitcher/second baseman, Littlefield

    Sanchez hit .576 with a .679 OBP and .966 slugging percentage. She totaled three home runs, 31 RBI and eight stolen bases. Sanchez also posted 63 strikeouts with a 4.11 ERA and .933 fielding percentage.
