MADISON, Wis. -- Four people and several pets were displaced Monday morning following an apartment fire on Madison's southwest side.

A Madison Fire Department spokesperson said the fire was reported at around 11 a.m. at 5817 Balsam Road. A resident was woken up by the sound of a smoke detector and found fire in his apartment.

The man was able to gather his three dogs and get out of the building safely. Firefighters then entered the apartment, found fire on the second floor, and put it out. A bird was rescued and was unharmed.

Nobody was injured and the American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
