Making homes safer for children: bed ministry now offering free gun locks in Monroe County
MONROE COUNTY — The Now I Lay Me Down bed ministry is helping to bring gun locks to Monroe County families. Eventually, the ministry also hopes to provide smoke detectors. The ministry, which began in 2001, provides a free bed and bed accessories to children in need ages 17 and younger. Recently, the ministry partnered with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to also provide free gun locks to families. Public Act 17 of 2023, which went into effect earlier this year, requires secure storage of firearms in Michigan homes with minors.

Lithium-ion battery believed to have caused fire in Milan home’s garage
MILAN, MI -- A charging lithium-ion battery is believed to have caused a fire in a one-story, single-family home in Milan on Tuesday, fire officials said. Firefighters were called to the home on West Miller Avenue at 3:41 p.m., July 16, according to the Milan Area Fire Department. They arrived to see heavy fire showing before calling for assistance, officials said.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A man accused of stabbing a man to death will not be soon be in court again. Jackson County District Judge Michael Klaeren signed an order Thursday, July 11, referring Richard Clark Brewer to the state-run Center for Forensic Psychiatry for a mental competency evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial, court records show.

Fire in Ypsilanti-area home causes $50K in damages
WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – A fire at a Washtenaw County home caused roughly $50,000 worth of damages. Ypsilanti Township fire crews were called around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, to the 2000 block of Woodruff Lane for a confirmed structure fire, said Lt. Pete White. When crews arrived, they found fire inside the single-family home and had to force open the door.
