Bon chance, Paris — New York City should never host the Olympics
When the Olympic Games kick off Friday, I’ll be overcome by a powerful wave of emotions. I’ll be filled with pride for our 592 Team USA athletes, including Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky, who are brilliantly representing our country in Paris, France. I’ll be giddy about obsessing over weird sports such as dressage and synchronized swimming that only get their moment in the sun every four years. Most of all though, I will heave a huge sigh of relief. Because the Olympics are, yet again, not taking place here in New York City. No FOMO for me! 2024 Mets Draft profile: R.J. Gordon
RJ Gordon is the son of Jason Gordon, a professional golfer. He attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, in his first three years of high school before transferring to West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch, California, in his senior year. He lettered twice at Notre Dame and in his one year at West Ranch. His senior year got cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he had a junior season, helping lead Notre Dame to a Mission League championship and a berth in the 2019 CIF Southern Division 1 Tournament by hitting .298//.459/.385 with two doubles, one home run, and three stolen bases.

Goodbye to Retiring Faculty Members
Mamaroneck is often praised for its athletics, school spirit and teachers. Amongst these three aspects of the MHS community, there exists one man: Coach Michael Chiapparelli. Chiapparelli, affectionately known as Chap, has led Mamaroneck to four state championships across boys’ hockey and baseball, coached modified girls’ hockey, and has served as a Physical Education teacher in the district for 45 years.

This year marked a historic season for both boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball, as the boys’ team not only set the record for the most wins in a season, but also tied the record held by the 2018 team for advancing the farthest in the Section 1 playoffs in school history, making it to the semi-finals.

South Baldwin Newcomers Ladies Club celebrates 30 Years. The South Baldwin Newcomers Ladies Club (SBNC) will host a Basket Bash “FUN”raiser on Aug 6 as part of its 30th anniversary celebration. SBNC will raffle off 32 baskets containing lots of goodies like four rounds of golf (Peninsula Golf Club), three nights at Sugar Beach Condos, and gift cards to Big Mike’s, GT’s, Jesse’s, Local & Company, Villagios, Cobalt, Sunliner Diner and other restaurants. Proceeds will go to SBNC’s student scholarships & charities. SBNC has raised $41K for charities & scholarships just during the last two years.

Beyond Boys: Girls’ Flag Football Comes to MHS
Over the past few years, Girl’s Flag Football has become increasingly popular throughout New York, with approximately 48 high schools welcoming the sport into their athletic programs in 2022. The introduction of Flag Football in nearby schools has persuaded the Mamaroneck High School athletic program to attempt to launch varsity flag football in the Spring 2025 season. It is anticipated that an official decision by the MHS Athletic Department will be made by next year. Until then, the team will operate as a club sport. This format allows the team to meet and begin honing their skills without the pressure of competition.

Mets' High-A affiliate hopes to shed light on still incurable illness. More than 85 years have passed since Lou Gehrig issued his famous farewell speech to baseball. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS and perhaps more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, continues to mystify medical experts. The Mayo Clinic defines it as “a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. … Eventually ALS affects control of the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe.”
