County roundup: Garrettsville prepares for Peach Social Car Cruise, plus news from Freedom, Hiram, Nelson, Mantua and Windham
The long-awaited time capsule opening took place July 6. Inside the time capsule were, among other things, old newspapers, an old book from the Garrettsville 120th Centennial and a song written about Garrettsville called “Old Garrettsville” that was sung by two girls, according to the James A. Garfield Historical Society, when the time capsule was buried in 1924. Two women sang the song at the time capsule opening.
Summit County Fair opens this week; kids under 15 get in free 1 day
TALLMADGE, Ohio – The Summit County Fair is scheduled for July 23-28 at the fairgrounds in Tallmadge, located at 229 E. Howe Road. A family tradition since 1850, the fair offers 4-H and open-class exhibits in livestock, horticulture, floraculture, domestic arts, culinary arts and fine arts. More than 250 food and commercial vendors will be spread out across the 66-acre fairgrounds, according to event organizers.
Wizardly Weekend charms downtown Kent
Downtown Kent took on a new look for the weekend as decorations transformed Acorn Alley, Water Street and Hometown Bank Plaza into the world of Harry Potter. Main Street Kent brought magic to Kent Saturday for the eighth annual Wizardly Weekend, filling downtown with activities such as a real-life falcon and owl, face painting and a build-your-own-wand station in Hometown Bank Plaza, renamed Goblin’s Plaza for the weekend.
Popular Cuyahoga Falls bridge closes for the summer for construction
CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — Those heading to Blossom Music Center soon may want to plan their trip, as a popular bridge in Cuyahoga Falls is closed for the rest of the summer. The Steels Corners Bridge eastbound has been closed on E. Steels Corners Road West of the State Route 8 interchange. The Summit County Engineer's website states the closure is to allow crews to replace bridge expansion joints, overlay the bridge deck with concrete and more.
Solon, Cleveland Metroparks trail eyes ‘26 completion date
The city of Solon in partnership with Cleveland Metroparks is working to develop a new trail starting from SOM Center Road and traveling through Solon and Chagrin Falls. Construction on the trail, 2 miles of which sits in Solon, has started and should be completed in 2026, Sean McDermott, chief planning and design officer at Cleveland Metroparks, told the Cleveland Jewish News.
Free children’s shoe giveaway at Maple Heights mayor’s ice cream social July 23
MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The City of Maple Heights will be offering free children’s shoes at its upcoming ice cream social with the mayor on Tuesday, July 23. The event, which runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will be held at the Maple Heights Historical Society located at 5810 Dunham Road.
Construction begins on Solon Community Park upgrades
In an effort to update Solon Community Park, construction has begun on phase one of a larger plan – the renovations of Cisar Field and playground, and a community garden. “The park was in much need of a facelift,” Richard Parker, director of recreation, told Cleveland Jewish News, said of all the new additions.
Solon mayor eyes lofty plans for future of city
For Solon Mayor Eddy Kraus, there is a lot to be excited about when it comes to his vision for Solon’s future. “Its exciting to have new construction and new projects going on, its exciting to see it through,” Kraus told the Cleveland Jewish News on July 12, referencing the Rails to Trails project, the former Liberty Ford lot and upgrades to Aurora Road.

Bicycle riders of all ages and abilities can go on a guided bike ride with Solon Mayor Eddy Kraus on July 24 as part of Cuyahoga County’s “Bike with a Mayor” series. The series is intended to allow residents to engage in physical activity with their elected leaders while learning about their city’s efforts to provide greenspace and trails.
