Cyclist who ‘knows his rights’ did not, in fact, know his rights

A cyclist on a nighttime bike ride was pulled over for unlawfully using his cell phone flashlight Thursday but went from handlebars to behind bars after he escalated the situation by regurgitating sovereign citizen rhetoric, police say.

Turns out, he’s got quite a criminal traffic record.

Jeziree L. Pryer, 41, faces felony charges of resisting arrest and other counts of riding a bike with no headlight, criminal nuisance and refusing to identify himself, according to a probable-cause statement obtained by InMaricopa.

Police saw Pryer riding his bike the wrong way on Bowlin Road, near Park Plaza, at 10:20 p.m. without a mounted headlamp.

Pryer reportedly became argumentative when officers told him he was being detained for using his cell phone in lieu of the required headlight.

He reportedly refused to identify himself because he “was not detained and knew his rights.”

Police said Pryer was “taken to the ground” after they told him to remove his backpack and thought he was reaching for his waistband.

Pryer allegedly resisted arrest when the handcuffs came out.

After he was mirandized, Pryer admitted to “being a dumb*ss,” according to the police report. He was booked into the Pinal County jail and faces more than four and a half years in prison.

Pryer has been arrested 11 other times in Maricopa, Flagstaff and Glendale, according to court records. His record features auto theft, wrong-way driving, attempted trespassing, aggravated harassment, assault and fighting.
