Ronald Earl Everington
Ronald Earl Everington, 72, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, July 12, at CarolinaEast Medical Center from a heart attack. He was born to Bobbie Scott Everington and Earl Ruffin Everington on October 9, 1951, in New Bern. Ronnie is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bennie Ray Everington, and niece Natalie Everington Engelman. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sadie Gaskins Everington; nephew Brad Everington (Mandy); Great-Nephews Brayden Everington and Lance Engelman; and Great-Nieces Elliana Engelman and Brynlee Everington; and his sweet little Mia Dog. Ronnie was a long-time member of Antioch FWB Church, where he served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He also loved to help cook for the Men’s Fellowship every quarter. He loved his Church. Ronnie spent four years in the U.S.A.F. and returned to New Bern, where he started working at Trent Auto Parts, Joe Alcoke Dealership, and retired from Craven County School Bus Garage in 2014. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park, with Pastors Kenny Vinston and Michael Ledbetter officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ronnie’s name to Antioch FWB Church, 762 Antioch Rd., New Bern, 28560, or to a charity of your choice. Bennett Funeral and Cremation Care is honored to serve the family and friends of Ronnie Everington.
Ilse Wangerin
Ilse Wangerin of New Bern passed away peacefully on Monday, July 8. She was born to Walter and Gretchen Mohr in Kiel, Germany, on May 15, 1934. In 1954, she immigrated to New York City, where she worked in the banking industry. It was here she met her husband, Donald Wangerin, of 45 years. After several moves across the country, they settled in Cary., where they continued to raise their family. After retirement, they moved to New Bern to be closer to family. Her family included children: David Wangerin (Rebecca), Steven Wangerin (Cathy), and Doris Smith (Gary). Her family included six grandchildren: Nathan and Christopher Lile, Stephanie Wangerin Dameworth (Taylor), Amy Wangerin, Hannah, and Dylan Smith. She is also survived by a cousin, Renate Anker of Kiel, Germany. Ilse and her husband Donald, who preceded her in death in 2004, enjoyed traveling and watching their children and grandchildren play sports. Ilse enjoyed traveling the world, reading, playing tennis, playing bridge, and needlepoint, and spending time with family and friends. Most recently, she enjoyed spending time with her friend Harry Kling. The matriarch of our family was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. The Memorial service will be held on July 20 at 1 p.m. at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern, N.C. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the NC Wildlife Federation, North Carolina Community Foundation, and Onslow Caring Communities Foundation. Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Ilse Wangerin.

Dr. Charles Preston Nicholson Jr
HIGH POINT — Dr. Charles Preston Nicholson Jr., 90, died June 30, 2024, at Lexington Health Care Center. Charles was born on February 24, 1934, in Cedartown, Georgia to Charles P. “Nick” Nicholson Sr. and Lois Petitt Nicholson. Charles graduated from McMinn County High School, Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee Medical School (Memphis). He completed his surgical residency at Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Charles was a general surgeon and practiced for 31 years in Morehead City. Charles loved aviation, airplanes and flying. He was an accomplished pilot, having ultimately earned his Airline Transport Pilot Certificate. Charles was also a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration for 50 years.

A North Carolina Democratic Party office in Carteret County was vandalized Saturday night.Officials said someone threw rocks and a concrete planter through the window of the office in downtown Morehead City.This comes after the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania Saturday.
