Vintage movie poster sale sparks reel memories for Wisconsin family
When Christina Katic looks at the posters that used to hang in the Waterloo, Wisconsin movie theater her grandparents owned, memories come flooding back. “I can smell the theater,” Katic said. “I can smell the flat Pepsi and the Twizzlers.”. “And the popcorn,” her mother, Mary Katic, added....
Though drive-ins dwindle, their nostalgic magic remains as strong as ever
The first movie I remember seeing at the drive-in theater was “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in Princeton, Minnesota. The film came out in 1980, which means I would have been 5 years old, watching slack-jawed from the bed of my dad’s root beer-brown Chevy pickup as Sissy Spacek warbled her way through Loretta Lynn’s life story. My parents used to throw a mattress back there so we kids could watch those double features, which started hours past our bedtimes. We’d lie beneath the stars eating popcorn and Jujubes, and if we fell asleep before the movie ended, jostling home while lying flat in the truck bed kept us that way.
Essay: Of Mice and Man
I picked up my kids from their school on my electric bike and zipped through the Arboretum. Lake Wingra glistened at us and the tall oak trees provided a sheltering canopy. My daughter counted several turkeys, while my son counted “one old man.” I hadn’t planned anything special for the sunny day; it was just a regular summer evening in Madison. I gave the kids string cheese after we got home and they ran in and out of the backyard through the family room. Then my summer evening turned dark.

We Should Have Been DJs’ latest album leans on community to fight through despair
“Find Something New To Miss” is a darkly scintillating effort from the punk trio. In early June, We Should Have Been DJs opened a Cloud Nothings show at the High Noon Saloon. Throughout the Madison punk band’s high-energy set, the band’s members—guitarist/vocalist Mike Pellino, bassist/vocalist Drew Ferguson, and drummer Erik Fredine—half-joked and half-apologized for the amount of time it’s taken them to release their new album, Find Something New To Miss. The album arrives 10 years after the band’s initial release, DEMO TAO, lending Find Something New To Miss an implicitly celebratory feel.
Joint business featuring coffee and play open in Lake Mills
LAKE MILLS — “A community living room” is how Abbie Pabon described her vision for the space shared by Present Not Perfect Play Co. and Simple Kup coffee that opened earlier this year. Present Not Perfect was originally founded in 2021 as an online business, but Pabon said they eventually wanted an in person space. ...
