It was a tough season for the Marshall girls basketball program in Capitol — South conference play in 2023-24. The Cardinals lost nine of their 10 conference games, only nabbing a win over Wisconsin Heights in the final game of the regular season to get in the win column.
Still, coaches across the conference noticed the talent and hustle on the Cardinals’ roster. Marshall was represented by a pair of players on the postseason all-conference teams. Senior Wynn Held wrapped up her high school career with a second team nod while freshman Paige Colden wrapped up her promising opening season with an honorable mention.
Held entered this season as the unquestioned leader of the Cardinals. She was fresh off of a second team all-conference level performance in her junior season and was named to the preseason watch list for the Wisconsin Sports Network’s high school girls basketball award for best senior point guard.
She backed up that reputation by putting together a strong senior season. She led Marshall in three major statistical categories by putting up 11.3 points, 5.7 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. She had by far the most assists and steals on the team with 147 and 55 total, respectively. Held also hauled in 3.3 rebounds per game. As for her next step in her career, Held holds offers from Madison College and Marian University of Wisconsin.
Colden’s honorable mention recognition represents the next generation of not only Marshall basketball, but girls basketball as a whole in the Capitol — South. She was one of only two freshmen to pick up all-conference honors, joining fellow honorable mention Macy Robinson of Cambridge.
Colden primarily came off the bench for the Cardinals this season but proved to be a valuable piece of the team thanks to her athleticism. She finished her freshman season with solid numbers, putting up 6.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 0.7 assists per game.
She is one of seven Marshall hoopers with notable varsity experience set to return next season, raising hopes for a brighter 2024-25 campaign.
