ST. MARYS – A nine-run first inning for Martensdale-St. Marys was the undoing for the GMG baseball team as the Wolverines fell 13-5 to the Blue Devils on Thursday, June 27. GMG (6-16) struck for two runs in the game’s first half inning before the Blue Devils (20-7) answered in kind. Cooper Oberbroeckling was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the home team, which totaled 12 hits and collected 12 total walks from GMG pitchers.

The AC/GC Chargers softball team was in action Monday, and split their games against the Des Moines Christian Lions. The team took the first game 13-6, with an early lead. The Lions picked up two runs, while the Chargers tacked on eight in the first inning. AC/GC then put up another run in the second inning to go up 9-2, and both teams were scoreless in the next two innings. The Chargers picked up three more runs in the fifth, and allowed one, then tallied their final run in the sixth inning while allowing two runs for the Lions. Des Moines Christian recorded their final run in the seventh inning.

DES MOINES, IOWA – The Omaha Storm Chasers dropped a back-and-forth game to the Iowa Cubs 5-4 Thursday, Independence Day at Principal Park. As the series shifted over to Des Moines for another three-game set, the I-Cubs scored first for the fourth straight night. A single and a walk put runners on first and second base to set up another single that plated the first run off of starter Daniel Lynch IV and took a 1-0 lead in favor of Iowa. Omaha’s offense mustered just four hits in the first four innings of the game and the Storm Chasers were held scoreless in those four frames.

The Norwalk softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Waukee Northwest on Wednesday night while the Warrior baseball squad lost 1-0 to Des Moines Roosevelt. Both softball games were tightly-contested until the late innings. The Class 5A fifth-ranked Wolves won the first game 5-0, scoring two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
