WVU football 2024 roster review: Safties
The Mountaineers return a ton of production at the safety spot, and added a Power 5 transfer. One thing the safeties room does not return is its coach, as Dontae Wright left Morgantown to become defensive coordinator at Troy after last season. That leaves WVU co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach ShaDon Brown to add the position group to his résumé.

West Virginia’s secondary has no excuses in 2024 – It’s do or die
Roll back the clock to the 2020 season, the second year on the job for head coach Neal Brown. The starting secondary consisted of Tykee Smith, Sean Mahone and Alonzo Addae at the three safety spots, and Dreshaun Miller and Nicktroy Fortune at cornerback. That's a unit that allowed just 159.6 passing yards per contest across the shortened, 10-game COVID season… a number that ranked No. 1 in all of college football. But things have fallen apart since then on the defensive side of the ball. The following season's iteration had its issues, but was still treading water. But these past two years, it's been a total collapse in the backend of the defense.
Coach's Take: WVU commit Taylor Brown is a natural
Wise head coach Steve Rapp simply refers to Taylor Brown as a natural. Brown, 6-foot-4, 255-pounds, is a three-sport athlete at his school earning all-state honors in both baseball and wrestling. And Rapp believes that he very well could add football to that list this year as he just started to commit to the game for the first time.
