The Publix supermarket chain operates approximately 1375 stores in 8 southern states. The company was founded in Winter Haven, Florida in 1930 by George W. Jenkins. It's not surprising that the lion's share of its locations are in the Sunshine State (872). Georgia has the second most at 212, and according to the Publix website, another is planned.

Set for a grand opening on May 22, the new 54,964 square foot supermarket and pharmacy will be located at 103 Mirror Lake Connector, Suite 200, Villa Rica. That is about 33 miles west of Atlanta on I-20.

Publix claims to be the largest employee owned company in America, with over 250k workers.
