President Joe Biden’s White House mocked former President Donald Trump’s oratorical gumbo of an answer on childcare, challenging others to figure out “what the hell that means.”

Trump gave remarks and answered questions Thursday at an event for the New York Economic Club, during which he biffed a question that his running mate had already pre-biffed . It was a two-minute walk in the verbal woods that has widely been described as a “word salad.”

On Friday morning’s edition of MSNBC’s Way Too Early , anchor Jonathan Lemire asked Biden Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates for a White House response to Trump’s answer:

JONATHAN LEMIRE: Yes, we played the sound earlier in the show. Donald Trump, of course. The GOP nominee, was asked yesterday about his plan to lower childcare costs, and in his rambling answer, he seemed to point to tariffs as a solution.

What does the White House say in response to that?

ANDREW BATES: Well, Jonathan, if you have any idea what the hell that answer means, you’re a better detective than I am, because these tariffs that he wants to apply across the board would amount to a $4,000 tax increase on working families.

And that is something that authorities across the private sector are warning would be devastating for our economy and would depress economic growth.

Whether it is Goldman Sachs or Moody’s or the conservative think tank, the American Action Forum, they have been very clear that this agenda would worsen inflation, would raise costs on basic items that every family needs, including items that are fundamental for child care.

If you’re buying a crib, if you’re buying bibs, this is going to impact all kinds of products that every single American family needs.

.And at the same time, MAGA nomics means giant tax giveaways for billionaires and for big corporations.

And instead, what we need to do, what the president and what Vice President Harris want to do, is cut taxes for working people and pass an expanded child tax credit. That’s what we need to do.
