MEDINA , Ohio (WJW) — Medina police on Thursday offered new details on the fatal officer-involved shooting of a 37-year-old woman at the county sheriff’s department on Wednesday.

A woman armed with a gun and knife was reported in the parking lot just after 6 p.m. Medina County Sheriff Terry Grice and deputy Doug Clinage confronted her outside, near the front lobby, Police Chief Edward Kinney said at a Thursday media briefing.

She refused to drop the weapons and was fatally shot by Grice. She was declared dead at the scene, “after life-saving efforts failed,” Kinney said.

The woman was identified Thursday as 37-year-old Victoria Carter, of Medina. She did not have a criminal record. When asked about any possible connection she had to the sheriff’s office, Kinney said her boyfriend was incarcerated in the county jail.

“She was known to us. She has an extensive history of mental health issues,” he said. “It’s absolutely tragic that she was unable to get the help that she needed so that this end result did not happen.”

    No officers were injured.

State investigators later found the gun to be a replica firearm, though the knife was real, Kinney said.

Grice and Clinage were “understandably distraught that this tragic situation occurred,” Kinney said.

“I think any reasonable officer would have reacted the way they did when presented with the exact same facts,” he said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now reviewing the incident, the I-Team reported.

“All standard protocols are being followed,” county Prosecutor Forrest Thompson told the I-Team.
