Global outage: Shelby Co. Clerk's office drivers license dept. down, MFD, MPD impacted

The Drivers License Department at the Shelby County Clerk's office has been impacted by the global tech outage, according to Clerk Wanda Halbert. All other systems, as of 10:30 a.m. Friday, were still operating.

A major technology outage has impacted personal computers, airlines, media companies, banks, and telecom firms around the world Friday, including some in Memphis and Shelby County.

According to reporting from USA Today, Crowdstrike, a U.S. firm that advertises being used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, said one of its recent content updates had a defect that impacted Microsoft's Windows Operating System. This has caused flights around the world to be grounded, hospital operating systems to be disrupted and some government services to be impacted.

Shelby County Government has experienced a minimal impact, but there may be some "indirect experience connection issues to IT vendor services."

Memphis Fire Department

Memphis Fire Department posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that some MFD systems have been impacted but the department is still able to receive calls, dispatch and respond to calls.

Memphis Police Department

According to the Memphis Police Department, some systems have been affected but it is not impacting the "ability to police." The radios within the department are still operating, and officers are being dispatched to calls for service.
