MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis mom says her 17-year-old son is lucky to be alive after he was shot several times by her daughter’s boyfriend when the boyfriend mistook the teen for a car burglar.

Frank Winding, 46, was booked in the Shelby County Jail on Thursday for attempted second-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a felony, nearly two months after the shooting.

Rosalyn Henderson said her son was shot in both legs and his foot and is still recovering from his injuries. She believes the charges against Winding are appropriate.

Roslyn Henderson said her son was shot three times when he was mistaken for a car burglar.

“Yes, if he shot him because he shouldn’t have shot anyone if he didn’t know who they were. It could have been anybody out there. He could have had his life taken,” said Henderson.

Henderson said her daughter paid her brother $5 to clean out her car parked outside their apartment building at Camelot Manor, off Knight Arnold.

Henderson said her son waited until the early morning hours to get started, and when Winding came outside to get something out of the car, he thought someone had broken into the vehicle and opened fire.

“He was on the driver’s side. He was cleaning it out, and he said he saw his feet hanging out. So, he really didn’t know who he was until I guess he came around the other side and started shooting,” Henderson. “I didn’t understand. If you knew somebody was around there, and when you got around there before you saw his feet, you should have looked up there and seen his face.”

Police said after Winding shot his girlfriend’s brother, he told the victim he made a mistake and drove him to the hospital. Henderson said her daughter also went to the hospital and told her she put her brother in a wheelchair, pushed him inside, and left.

“He was scared. I know he was scared. “He was frightened,” said Henderson.

In Tennessee, a person is not justified in using deadly force to prevent or terminate the other’s trespass on real estate or unlawful interference with personal property. Henderson said her son is still walking with a limp.

“I hate it happened to him,” she said.

According to court records, in 2021, Winding charged with aggravated assault after threatening a gas station clerk with a gun, but the charges were later dismissed.

Winding is being held on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
