Red Jacket adopts new nickname. Here’s what was decided
SHORTSVILLE, NY — The new era of the Red Jacket Cardinals has begun. At the Manchester-Shortsville Board of Education meeting July 2, school district officials announced the approval of its new nickname and mascot, Cardinals, replacing Indians. Cardinals, which received 515 suggestions from students, staff, alumni and community members surveyed, beat out two other options, Rail Hawks and Bears, which received 484 and 146 suggestions, respectively.

Red Wings keep rolling in 3-1 win over Buffalo
It was another complete team effort as the Rochester Red Wings (7-2, 45-37) knocked off the Buffalo Bisons (3-5, 40-42) 3-1 in Buffalo on Wednesday. The Red Wings jumped out to another early lead before holding off a rally from the Bisons. It was poor defense from the Bisons that got the scoring started in the second. Jackson Cluff reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. With runners on the corners and two outs, Erick Mejia hit one to Bisons’ second baseman Miguel Hiraldo whose throwing error scored Cluff.

Syracuse, N.Y. —The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team has picked up a transfer from the Rochester area. Ava Peers of Fairport, N.Y., who spent her freshman season at the University of Louisville as a midfielder, will transfer to Syracuse for the 2025 season. American Legion Tuesday Wrap: Greece Post holds off late rally to win 12th straight
GREECE POST 468 (12-1) 6. Weston Elkovitch hurled a complete and drove in a pair of runs with two hits as Greece Post held off a late rally to win for the 12th straight time. Elkovitch struck out five and allowed five runs on five walks and four hits to pick up the win. The Canisius University commit also got Greece Post on the scoreboard with a one-out single in the third that brought home Brady Gerig. Elkovitch made it a 5-0 game with a two-out single in the fourth that scored Quentin Grimes. Gerig went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the win. Joey Sanna was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Grimes was 1-2 with a walk and an RBI. Derrick Allen singled, drove in a run and also scored. Irondequoit Post’s Brennen Russo cut a five-run deficit to two with a three-run home in the fourth. Tyler Cannon went 2-for-3 including a two-out single in the seventh that drove in Orlando Figueroa and Shaun Cannon to make it a one-run game. Aiden Julian walked and scored. Ian Fleck was 1-2.
