MIDLAND ― Her street scene titled "South of France" won best of show for Joyce Beatty of Chester, W.Va., in the 18th Summer Gallery 2024 show by the Midland Arts Council.

Rodica Constantine's painting "Graceful Playing at the Merrick Gallery" won the juror's award for second place.

Jennie Johnstone took third, the merit award, for her "Wildflowers in Blue Bottles."

Johnstone is a Beaver resident. Constantine, whose rich accent recalls her native Romania, resides in Economy Borough.

Beatty has entered this art competition the past four years. It is her first best of show.

Honorable mentions went to Ellie Gimbus of Ohioville, Alisha Hilfinger of Chippewa Township, and Nancy Wright of Chester, a sister to Joyce Beatty.

The exhibition, part of Midland's 4th of July festivities, is free through Sunday, with hours of 1-7 p.m. on Independence Day and 6-8 p.m. other days.

This year's show features 97 works from 36 artists, according to Evelyn Adams, president of the Midland Arts Council. Winners received their awards at a reception Tuesday.
