Most incoming transfers are expected to contribute immediately, while others are brought in for their potential. Here are five players who fans will likely have to wait a season or two before they’re in the spotlight:

    QB Julian Sayin, Ohio State

The skinny: Nick Saban’s sudden retirement at Alabama created plenty of portal repercussions, one of which was Sayin transferring. A 2024 recruit, he hardly unpacked in Tuscaloosa before finding his new home at Ohio State. He won’t be rushed in Columbus, but early impressions have been very positive.

    QB Dante Moore, Oregon

The skinny: Moore’s transfer came as somewhat of a surprise, but Oregon quickly pounced at the opportunity to grab the true freshman from UCLA. He will obviously sit this season behind Dillon Gabriel , but he should be in the running for the starting job as early as next season.

    QB Demond Williams Jr, Washington

The skinny: The buzz coming out of Washington this summer has been loud and consistent regarding Williams, who followed head coach Jedd Fisch from Arizona. Will Rogers is the unquestioned quarterback this season but expect Williams to get some snaps while he is groomed to become the likely starter in 2025.

    LB Tackett Curtis, Wisconsin

The skinny: Curtis will see playing time this season behind veterans Jaheim Thomas and Jake Chaney at inside linebacker after quickly acclimating to the defensive schemes in Madison. Expectations are that Curtis will take over their role in 2025.

    OL Jason Zandamela, Florida

The skinny: Zandamela was one of the more intriguing players in the portal, mostly due to his potential. He has only played football for three years, but quickly became a top high school recruit because of his athleticism. After committing to USC he grew homesick which brought him back to his home-state Gators. He likely needs time to mature, develop and learn the position, but everyone in Gainesville is excited about his potential.
