Tony Goldwyn: The Latest Celebrity to Dine at El Paso’s L & J Café

A favorite lunch and dinner spot for many El Pasoans, L & J Café has become an almost mandatory dining stop for celebrities just passing through or in town looking for a taste of our border food.

The list of famous names the iconic landmark has fed over the years includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Elliott, and Ethan Hawke. Wilmer Valderamma and Martha Stewart have also chosen to get their Mex on at the Central El Paso eatery. (Valderamma had steak tacos and a cup of tortilla soup, and Martha ordered green enchiladas.)

If you’re going to have a random run-in with a famous face in El Paso, chances are it’s going to be at “The Old Place by the Graveyard.”

Recently, over the July Fourth weekend, actor Tony Goldwyn dropped in for a bite and happily posed for photos with the restaurant staff.

The actor, director and producer has a long list of movie and television credits - most recently joining the cast of NBC’s Law & Order as Manhattan DA Nicholas Baxter - but he is probably best known for his breakthrough role as Patrick Swayze’s murderous friend Carl Bruner in the 1990 movie, Ghost.

That fact was not lost on many who playfully commented on the restaurant’s social media. “Are you sure it was him? Remember he died in Ghost,” one person joked. “And he’s eating at a restaurant next to Concordia Cemetery, maybe it’s HIS Ghost?”

"I would have refused him service to your establishment because he had Sam Wheat killed," teased another.

No word on what Goldwyn was doing in town, or what he dined on.
