Everything to know about Fourth of July weekend at the Delaware beaches
The theme at the Delaware beaches this weekend is red, white and traffic. That's right, it's the Fourth of July, the busiest week of the year in Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island. Multiple towns will host free, not-to-miss firework shows you can watch from the beach, but you've...

Council had narrowed its list of potential...

Rehoboth Beach commissioners raise property taxes; more fee increases likely
Parking fees aren't the only costs going up in Rehoboth Beach this year after city commissioners spent $800,000 to attract a new city manager, on top of his salary. The commissioners adopted a $38 million budget in March with the intention of raising numerous fees to cover a $4.4 million shortfall. After increases to parking rates, the rental tax rate and wastewater fees were approved earlier this year, the Board of Commissioners in June voted to raise...

Lewes leaders need to fix coin machine
To Lewes Mayor and City Council: If you are going to charge all-out for parking, the least you can do is fix the coin machine at Mary Vessels Park. How long is that machine going to remain covered? It is now July and it’s been broken all season. As you must know, quarters are impossible to come by while in town. Merchants won’t give them to you. Banks won’t give them to you unless you’re a customer. And now the one convenient place where coins have usually been available has been down seemingly forever. To add insult to injury, ParkMobile requires a two-hour minimum. Who decided the logic behind that idiotic rule?

Dewey Nalu expansion in town’s hands
With public opinion evenly split regarding Dewey Nalu’s proposed expansion plans, the planning and zoning commission voted 4-1 June 27 to recommend the restaurant’s conditional use to town council. Attorney Elio Battista Jr., representing Nalu owner Regan Derrickson, said the proposed expansion meets all current code and FEMA...
Suzanne Goode will improve Rehoboth Beach
Rehoboth Beach is in trouble. Our current leadership in Rehoboth Beach is moribund and removed from the citizens. The board makes one unwise decision after another. From the outrageous compensation package for our new city manager, making him one of the highest-compensated public servants in all of America, to losing control of one-third of the city’s beaches due to not wanting to pay a reasonable $10,000 the state requested, to now considering taking significant additional effluent from Sussex County to be discharged off our beaches, the city is on a roll, making one bad decision after another. These decisions are taken with no consideration of what the residents of Rehoboth Beach want. There seems to be no interest on the part of current leadership in even hearing what citizens have to say.
Rising costs could alter Rehoboth Beach Patrol project
Just months into construction, cost increases for the Rehoboth Beach Patrol/public restroom construction project at the eastern end of Baltimore Avenue could lead to design changes. The extent of each is unknown, but both will be discussed during a commissioner workshop July 8. Without going into specifics, City Manager Taylour...
Lewes open space campaign gets new state funding
The campaign to buy Lewes’ Fourth Street Preserve and keep it as open space is about halfway to its fundraising goal. The effort just got a boost in the form of $200,000 in state funding that was secured by Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes. The money is in the bond bill that the Legislature approved at the end of June.

Rehoboth commissioners to discuss city manager contract July 8
Spurred by complaints from concerned citizens, the Delaware Attorney General’s Office determined Rehoboth Beach officials violated the Freedom of Information Act several times during the process of hiring Taylour Tedder earlier this year. Deputy Attorney General Dorey L. Cole issued her opinion June 26. As part of that opinion,...
