Athletes of the Week July 5
Leading her team in the circle and at the plate, Ainsley Clem caught the attention of quite a few softball fans with her strikeout ability in the District 3 softball major all-star tournament by striking out 15 over nine innings of work. In the Cape team's 8-3 loss to Laurel July 1, Clem registered nine of those strikeouts while driving in a team-leading two runs on a team-high two hits. She also led her squad in steals, swiping an impressive three. Clem began playing softball in third grade, at the age of 8, for Lewes Little League. Although she has only been playing for three years, her strides as a strikeout pitcher have come thanks to her pitching coach Rachel Hudson. Clem will be a sixth-grader at the new Frederick Thomas Middle School in Lewes in the fall. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her dog, Nova, being outside, swimming at the pool and relaxing at the beach.
Lewes 8-10 baseball all-stars win thriller over Laurel 18-17
Literal and figurative fireworks showered the grass and dirt of Laurel Little League July 3, as Lewes and Laurel locked horns and teeth in an epic elimination game. Jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first inning, the Lewes 8-10 baseball all-stars continued to tack on runs to make it 15-5 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. One more out and the game would have been over, but Laurel staged a nine-run, two-out rally to get within one at 15-14. Tied 16-16 in the bottom of the fifth, Brody Fazio came up big for his teammates and drove in two runs to provide the security needed for an 18-17 victory.
Milton leaps over Lewes in District 3 8-10 all-star opener
Whether by Route 9 or Route 24, the two Cape Region teams in the District 3 8-10 all-star tournament, Milton and Lewes, went opposite the beach traffic July 2 to battle one another in Laurel. Following their 11-1 victory in four innings, the Milton players and supporters not only enjoyed their ride home a bit more, but also staked their claim to bragging rights, for now.
