Minerva man dead after standoff, area now safe for residents

The Carroll County Sheriff's Department confirms a suspect is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing at police from a house on Monday.

Carroll County Sheriff's Office says it received a 911 regarding the 9100 block of Metro Street NW in Minerva for reports of a suicidal man pointing a gun at his wife. Police say the wife was able to leave the home.

Police arrived at the home around 3 p.m., and moments later, the suspect started shooting from the home. Law enforcement officials were able to take cover behind their vehicles to take cover from what was determined to be a combination of rifle and shotgun rounds.

Police say officers did not fire back but did use tear gas and flash bangs.

Police were able to make entry into the home several hours later; a drone was used to locate the suspect, Benny Joiner, who was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No officers were injured.

News 5 spoke with a neighbor who did not know Joiner.

"Small town like this, this is almost like a movie. It's pretty crazy," said Randee Detros.

Monday afternoon, the Village of Minerva posted on Facebook that the area of Metro and Kennel roads was safe again for residents. Some police units will remain on scene for the investigation.

According to Google Maps, Minerva, which is located about an hour and a half southeast of Cleveland in Stark and Carroll counties, is home to around 3,700 residents.
