Time to reset, reflect: Group plans vigil on fourth anniversary of George Floyd’s death

This Saturday, May 25, marks the fourth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. An event taking place at the site of his death hopes to provide self-care and healing for community members.
The intersection where Floyd was killed — the corner of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue — is known as George Floyd Square. The Rise and Remember event, now in its fourth year, will take place there on Saturday. The event is organized by the George Floyd Global Memorial, and will include a candlelight vigil and mutual aid offerings, such as clothing, food and household supplies for community members.
Jeanelle Austin, executive director of the George Floyd Global Memorial, said this year’s event focuses on giving community members an opportunity to reset and practice self-care following years of racial justice work, which can be emotionally taxing.
“We can’t fight for Black lives and kill ourselves in the process,” Austin said. “So what does it look like to integrate wellness and rest and care and economic care? And that’s why mutual aid is so important.”
A wellness tent will be set up at the event, providing services like acupuncture. Information and resources related to health insurance will also be available.
“Our community has given so much and we just want to have an opportunity to give back, to love, to serve and to experience joy with each other,” Austin said.
The Rise and Remember event will start at 9 a.m., with Mari Mansfield, the original artist of the street mural which lists the names of people killed by police, repainting the artwork. Community activities will begin at 2 p.m. and last until 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., a candlelight vigil led by members of Floyd’s family will begin.
